A little more than a year ago, my company moved to a new location. The move was the result of a poor real estate investment coupled with the recession and few other factors. Needless to say, no one was thrilled about this. While our old building left much to be desired, it had a good location near a metro. But the new building was worse. Let's compare the old vs. the new, shall we?
Parking:
Old Building- Not enough parking, so people were triple parked and had to play musical cars, sometimes multiple times a day but at least we had this guy living in the parking lot.
New Building - Enough parking, but co-worker had car stolen from said parking lot.
Office Space:
Old Building - Smaller space, but open layout.
New Building - Larger, but we moved the biggest department into a smaller space, while my floor practically has space for a bowling alley.
Building Condition:
Old Building - Nasty carpet, perpetually broken bathroom, but we did have a door directly to the outside so on nice days we could enjoy fresh air.
New Building - New carpet and paint, but a smelly and perpetually broken elevator with no emergency phone inside, broken bathroom stall doors, windows that don't open, stink bug infestation, and dry air that has given me a permanent skin rash.
Local Attractions:
Old Building - Near the Metro! Walk to Starbucks! Cosi! Grocery! Gourmet Market! and more!
New Building - Across the street from a bowling alley. The closest "shopping center" which had nothing good, burned down the day we moved and after 10 months they've finally started to rebuild. Walk to restaurant = Meat in a Box, bad name; great kebabs.
My commute:
Old Building - 8 miles round trip
New Building - 16 miles round trip
So I ask you, which would you rather work in?
