It has been made apparent to me, through a number of comments - offline of course-, that I was not nearly descriptive enough when describing our current and past offices. So I decided to delve a little deeper into what we've got going on here.
As I stated earlier, the company acquired the building at the height of the economy with the intention of a quick flip, but then shit hit the fan and the company was stuck. So, in reality, we acquired 3 buildings. All of which remained mostly empty for at least 3 years. We did move a department into one of the buildings - just a portion of the first floor - for a good year before the rest of us made the move. Here's what they were stuck with: The second floor was the headquarters of a Muslim Nonprofit, until it was raided by the FBI. The place was left trashed and no one returned. I saw it, it looked like the end of the world up there. Food left out, papers everywhere, the occasional photo, and at least 2 years worth of dust.
This building is also located near a Planned Parenthood, so my co-workers got to walk through protesters every Friday on their way into work. When I went there for a meeting, there was a sign on the door that said, "We are not Planned Parenthood." Fast forward a year and no one is in the building since we all moved to a different one and can you guess who is there now? Squatters. Dirty Needles. Waste... Lovely. Let me remind you, this building is currently for sale of lease. Call your realtor, I know
Moving on to the current office space. Remember this? It's the entrance to my building. The plant is no longer there, and we've painted, but it's still sad. There's only so much lipstick you can put on a pig, right?
There were "renovations" before we moved in, and there was a plan. But things changed. After we moved, we realized we needed an extra office. So the powers at be just had 2 walls put up. Measurements? No need, just eyeball it, hence the splitting of ceiling tiles and lights.
Can you see how the light goes right into the wall?
Also, see that sprinkler? Our open floor of roughly 30' x 30' has about 20 of them. Our floor used to house a Greek Orthodox Church. Yes, I'm serious. No, I can't make this up.
